How much shipping volume will a custom tumbler order use? You can estimate carton volume in cubic metres (CBM) from the packed outer carton dimensions, units per carton and order quantity. This worked example shows the arithmetic so buyers can compare packaging options and request a more complete quote.
All carton sizes, packing counts and totals below are hypothetical planning inputs, not Coolnice product specifications, a freight quote or a promise that a given tumbler fits a carton. Ask for the final packed carton list after the cup, lid, accessories, individual box and protection method are fixed.
Carton CBM formula
When dimensions are in centimetres, CBM per carton = outer length × outer width × outer height ÷ 1,000,000. For one packing configuration, cartons needed = round up(order units ÷ units per carton), then total CBM = cartons needed × CBM per carton. Use the outside of the closed carton, including its height after sealing, rather than the size of an empty cup or an inner gift box.
Worked example: 240 tumblers

For option C, one carton is 60 × 45 × 35 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0945 m³. At 12 units per carton, 240 ÷ 12 = 20 cartons; 20 × 0.0945 = 1.890 m³. Option A has a smaller example total because its hypothetical carton packs more units in less outside volume. It does not prove that A is suitable for the chosen tumbler, safe in transit, or cheaper to ship.
Use the calculation for your own order
- Choose the exact cup capacity, lid, handle, straw and accessories. Start with the 30 oz versus 40 oz buyer guide if capacity is still open.
- Agree on the individual packaging and any printed box, then request the final units per master carton and the sealed outer dimensions. Our logo and packaging guide covers choices to put in the brief.
- Calculate each carton type separately. If 100 units use one package and 140 use another, round up the carton count for each type before adding their CBM.
- Ask for gross weight per carton, carton count, dimensions, destination and shipment terms along with CBM. The carrier or forwarder determines chargeable weight and actual freight cost; CBM alone is not a shipping price.

Frequently asked questions
Is CBM the same as shipping weight?
No. CBM is volume. A freight provider may consider physical weight, dimensions, route and service when it calculates charges.
Can I use a product-page cup dimension instead of a carton dimension?
No. Cup dimensions leave out the lid, handle, retail box, protective material and the master carton’s walls. Use the packed outside measurements.
What if my order is not divisible by the carton pack count?
Round the carton count up, then ask the supplier to confirm whether the final carton has the same dimensions and weight as a full carton. Adjust your estimate if it differs.
