Why published “cold” hours are not a ranking
Brands can describe different outcomes: how long ice remains, how long a drink stays below a chosen temperature, or how long a cup keeps water feeling cool. Starting temperature, ice mass, drink volume, room temperature, lid position and the time the cup is opened all affect the result. A claim for “cold” cannot be compared directly with an “iced” claim.
For example, the Stanley Quencher H2.0 40 oz and Simple Modern Trek 40 oz publish their own product details and temperature claims. Those figures describe each maker’s product under its own conditions; they are not measurements from one shared test. Coolnice’s 40 oz Gradient Tumbler is described as double-wall vacuum insulated, but its product listing alone cannot prove that it outlasts another model.
How to run a fair ice-retention comparison
- Choose exact models. Write down the model, capacity, lid and any accessories for each tumbler. Comparing an open straw lid with a sealed lid changes the question.
- Use the same fill. Add the same measured amount of ice and water to each cup, with the same starting temperatures. Record the actual quantities.
- Keep conditions equal. Place the cups together in the same room, away from direct sun and heat. Record room temperature and use the same lid position and opening schedule.
- Define the result first. Decide whether you are measuring ice remaining, water temperature or both. Log observations at the same times using the same instruments.
- Repeat and report. Run more than one trial, keep the raw readings and report the method alongside the results. Small differences can be caused by uncontrolled conditions.

What affects ice retention?
Insulation and lid design
Vacuum insulation helps reduce heat transfer through the body, while the lid and straw opening affect heat entering from the top. A splash-resistant lid does not automatically make a cup leakproof or guarantee better ice retention. Compare the actual lid supplied with your order.
Capacity and fill level
Two cups of different sizes may contain different amounts of ice and liquid. A claim made at one fill level may change when the same tumbler is partially filled. Match capacities and fill conditions when you want a meaningful comparison.
Usage conditions
Sun, ambient temperature and repeated opening affect results. A laboratory-style run on a table may not predict a cup used outdoors or in a warm vehicle. State the use case when requesting evidence from a brand or supplier.

- Which exact cup and lid were used for the temperature claim?
- How much ice and water were added, and what were their starting temperatures?
- What was the ambient temperature and how often was the lid opened?
- Was the endpoint “ice still visible” or a measured water temperature?
